  • Syracuse, NY

Job Description

Job Summary:

Upstate Medical University is seeking individuals from the community to serve as Standardized Patients (SPs), helping train future physicians and other healthcare professionals.

Standardized Patients are trained to portray patients in realistic healthcare encounters, giving students an opportunity to practice clinical and communication skills in a supportive educational setting. No acting or medical experience is required. Upstate provides training and guidance to prepare SPs for their assigned roles.

SPs portray a variety of patient scenarios, which may involve discussing medical histories, describing symptoms, participating in physical examinations, and providing feedback to learners. Some encounters require wearing a hospital gown with personal undergarments. SPs are informed of the expectations for each assigned case in advance.

Sessions may be recorded for educational and assessment purposes, with access restricted through secure university systems.

This is flexible, paid work at $20 per hour, with assignments scheduled according to program needs and SP availability. SPs work with program staff to prepare for encounters and help create a consistent learning experience for students.

  • Ability to respond naturally to student questions while following established case guidelines.
  • Willingness to participate in training, accept coaching, and incorporate feedback.
  • Ability to provide constructive verbal and written feedback to students when assigned.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient cases, student performance, and program information.
  • Willingness to participate in physical examinations and recorded encounters as outlined in assigned cases, with expectations reviewed in advance.
